Conversion runs entirely in your browser using the native HTMLMediaElement, Canvas, and MediaRecorder APIs — no WebAssembly download and no server round-trip. When you press Convert, the tool loads your video into an off-screen element, draws each frame onto a Canvas at the target resolution, and captures that Canvas as a live video stream at up to 30 frames per second.
Audio is routed through the Web Audio API: a MediaElementSource node feeds the original soundtrack into a MediaStreamDestination, and the resulting audio track is merged with the Canvas video track. MediaRecorder then encodes the combined stream into the output container you selected, producing a self-contained file. Because the work happens on your device, your video is never transmitted to or stored on Convert26 servers.
Browsers can natively encode WebM (VP9/VP8) and, on Safari and some Chromium builds, MP4 (H.264) via MediaRecorder. MOV and AVI containers cannot be produced directly in-browser, so the tool encodes to the closest supported container (MP4) and labels the download with your chosen extension so it imports correctly into apps that key off the file extension. The input format is detected automatically from the file name and MIME type, so you can load MP4, WebM, MOV, AVI, MKV, FLV, WMV, 3GP and other common containers that your browser can decode.
