About the Video Compressor - Compress Videos Online for Free tool

The Video Compressor tool shrinks the file size of MP4, WebM, MOV, AVI and MKV videos right inside your browser, with no uploads and no sign-up. Your video is decoded, re-encoded at the quality and resolution you choose, and rebuilt into a smaller file — all on your own device using the browser's native video engine.

Video compression matters because raw video files are enormous. A few minutes of phone footage can easily run into hundreds of megabytes, which is far too large to email, upload to a web form, or share on messaging apps. Compressing that footage brings it under the size limits these channels impose while keeping the picture clear enough for its purpose — a social post, a portfolio clip, or an attachment.

Browser-based compression is the private alternative to online compressors that send your video to a remote server. Because every frame is processed locally with the MediaRecorder and Canvas APIs, the file never leaves your device, there is no upload queue, and nothing is stored after you close the tab. That makes it safe for personal footage, internal company clips, and anything you would rather not hand to a third party.

Choose a quality preset — High for near-original clarity, Medium for a balanced result, or Low for the smallest file — then pick a target resolution from 1080p down to 360p, and select an output format. The tool re-encodes the video in real time, shows a live progress bar, and hands you a downloadable compressed file with the size reduction displayed alongside the original. Use cases include shrinking videos for email, fitting clips under social media size limits, reducing storage on your phone, and preparing web-ready footage.

How the browser-based processing works

Compression runs entirely in your browser using the native HTMLMediaElement, Canvas, and MediaRecorder APIs — no WebAssembly download and no server round-trip. When you press Compress, the tool loads your video into an off-screen element, draws each frame onto a Canvas at the target resolution, and captures that Canvas as a live video stream at up to 30 frames per second.

Audio is routed through the Web Audio API: a MediaElementSource node feeds the original soundtrack into a MediaStreamDestination, and the resulting audio track is merged with the Canvas video track. MediaRecorder then encodes the combined stream at the bitrate you selected, producing a self-contained MP4 or WebM file. Because the work happens on your device, your video is never transmitted to or stored on Convert26 servers.

Output format depends on browser support: Chrome, Edge and Firefox produce WebM (VP9/VP8), while Safari can produce MP4 (H.264). The Auto option picks the best format your browser supports. The degree of reduction depends on the source — a high-bitrate phone video can shrink by 70 percent or more, while an already-compressed clip shrinks less. Very large or long videos take longer and use more memory, so lower the resolution for heavy files.
