About the Image to Text (OCR) tool

The Image to Text tool uses optical character recognition (OCR) to extract readable text from photos, scans, and screenshots. Recognition runs in your browser, so your images stay private.

OCR turns a picture of a document back into editable text you can copy, search, and paste — useful for digitising receipts, quotes, signs, or printed notes without retyping them.

OCR is the bridge between paper and digital text. Instead of retyping a printed quote, a receipt total, or a paragraph from a book, you photograph it and let the tool turn the image back into editable text you can paste into a document, search through, or feed into another application. This saves hours of manual typing and eliminates transcription errors.

The quality of extraction depends on the source image. Clean, high-contrast, well-lit photos of printed text give the best results, while handwriting, low-light photos, and skewed angles are harder for the engine to read. For the most accurate output, crop the image to the text region first and ensure the text is roughly horizontal.

How the browser-based processing works

Optical character recognition runs entirely in your browser using Tesseract.js, a WebAssembly port of the Tesseract OCR engine. When you load an image and start recognition, the tool passes the image pixels to the WASM engine, which analyses connected components, identifies character shapes, and matches them against its trained language model to produce editable text.

Your image never leaves your device — there is no upload, no server-side OCR, and no copy retained after download. The recognition runs on your device CPU through WebAssembly, and the extracted text appears in the output area where you can copy it to your clipboard or download it as a text file. Closing the tab discards the image and the extracted text immediately.

The engine recognises a wide range of Latin-script languages. For best results, use clear printed text in a supported script, crop to the text region with the Crop Image tool first, and rotate the image with the Rotate & Flip tool if the text is not horizontal. To extract text from a PDF, convert the pages to images first with the PDF to JPG tool, then run each image through OCR.
