Cropping is the fastest single edit that improves a photo: it removes distracting background, tightens the framing around a subject, and lets you fit an image into a fixed aspect ratio such as a square profile picture or a 16:9 banner. Because cropping discards pixels rather than re-encoding them, the remaining area keeps its full original resolution and sharpness.
The tool shows a live crop rectangle you can drag to position, with handles to resize the selection. Constrain the crop to a specific ratio such as 1:1, 4:3, or 16:9 to match a target frame exactly, or crop freely for full creative control. The preview updates as you adjust so you see the final framing before you download.
Cropping runs entirely in your browser using the HTML Canvas API. When you drag the crop handles and apply the crop, the tool calculates the selected rectangle in source-image pixels, draws only that region onto an off-screen canvas at its native resolution, and re-encodes the canvas as a new image file. No pixels are resampled or re-encoded beyond the crop boundary, so the kept area is pixel-for-pixel identical to the original.
Your image never leaves your device — there is no upload, no server-side processing, and no copy retained after download. The original file on your device is never modified; the tool produces a new cropped file you download alongside it. Because the crop is destructive to the output (the discarded edges are gone from the downloaded file), always keep your original if you might want a different crop later.
To change the dimensions of the whole image rather than remove edges, use the Resize Image tool. To remove unwanted edges and then shrink the file, crop first and then run the result through Compress Image. For straightening a slightly tilted scan or photo, rotate the image first with the Rotate & Flip tool, then crop to the levelled result.
